MSDS and Health & Safety Information

MSDS Information

What is an "MSDS sheet"? A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with that substance. U.S. law requires chemical manufacturers and importers to provide MSDSs for their products, and to evaluate the hazards of their chemicals. A MSDS will include information such as:
  • Physio-chemical Data
    • Chemical Composition
    • Specific Grafity
    • Melting and Boiling Points
    • Vapor Pressure and Density
    • Flash Points
    • Solubility
    • Percent Volatility

  • Health and Safety Data
These are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.
    • General Health Hazards
    • Reactivity
    • Spill and Leak Procedures
    • Special Protection
    • Storage and Handling
    • Toxicity
    • First Aid

    Where can I find MSDS?

    1. The OHSU Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (CROET), maintains an excellent site on MSDS Resources. It includes links to MSDS Search Engines, manufacturer's MSDS and websites, an MSDS FAQ and glossary, and related information.

    2. Your laboratory should have a collection of MSDS that came with chemicals that have been ordered.

    3. The OGI Library maintains a duplicate copy of all MSDS sheets received at OGI. These are found in the library staff area. Inquire at the circulation desk for access to these sheets.

    4. You can get MSDS from the manufacturer of the chemical. Contact information for their customer service departments are generally available on the web. Some well-known manufacturers and sources for MSDS are:

    5. Books such as the Merck Index (library call number REF RS51 .M4 1996 12th Edition) are not formally MSDS, but can give useful information on toxicity, physical properties and incompatibles.

    6. You can find MSDS on many Internet sites. Here's a handy list of sites and links to other sources that maintain other sites of MSDS:
