General Information for Orbis Cascade Alliance Users
The OHSU Science & Engineering Library is a member of the
Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of over 30 academic libraries
in the Northwest. One of the major benefits of Alliance membership
is access to patron initiated borrowing of books via Summit, the Alliance
union catalog, which contains the holdings of all Orbis Cascade Alliance
members.
What is Alliance Borrowing? Who is eligible to use Alliance
Borrowing?
Alliance borrowing is a Web-based service that allows OHSU
students, faculty and staff with current library cards to
request books from other Alliance libraries. The service is fast,
easy to use and accessible at any time from the library or your
home or office, by connecting to the Summit catalog.
What can I request through Alliance Borrowing?
All Alliance member libraries loan generally circulating books through this
service, and some member libraries may loan other types of materials,
such as videos. The system will let you know if the material you requested
is not available. Requests for journal articles and items unavailable
via Alliance Borrowing can be obtained through the Interlibrary
Loan Department.
How can I request Alliance materials?
Search the SEL catalog or Summit
union catalog. Once you have
identified an item that you want to borrow, simply follow the
on-screen instructions starting with "REQUEST THIS ITEM." You must identify the institution with which you are affiliated, "Ore Health & Sci." The
system will prompt you for your name, library barcode number and
preferred pickup location. You SHOULD select the "OGI S&E Circulation desk" for
delivery or the materials will take longer to get to you! The Summit catalog will let you know if the item is available and to which library the request has been routed.
How can I check the status of my request?
View the status of your
request using the "view your record"
function in the OHSU catalog. You will be prompted for your name
and library barcode number.
Where can I pick up or return Alliance materials?
Materials will be
delivered for you to pick up at the
circulation desk at the location you select within a couple of
working days. Books are due back in 3 weeks and other selected
materials such as videos in 3 days. Return Alliance materials to any
OHSU library.
Are there any late fees for overdue Alliance materials?
Late fees are charged as follows: $0.50 per day for the first 10
days, $1.00 per day for the next 15 days. Lost item charge:
$75.00 plus $15 processing fee.
What about journal articles and materials I can't find in the Summit catalog?
Requests for journal articles and items unavailable via Alliance Borrowing
can be obtained through the Interlibrary
Loan Department.
How can I get an OSHU Science & Engineering Library card?
Come to the Library circulation desk or use the library's Online Registration Form.
