Entering full-time Ph.D. students may be eligible for financial support through a combination of tuition scholarships, OGI fellowships, named fellowships and graduate research assistantships. Offers of support are initiated by the individual academic departments. Part-time Ph.D. students may be eligible for some of the above. Partial tuition scholarships may be awarded by the school or individual academic departments to entering full-time M.S. students.


Federal Financial Aid
Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans are available to eligible students who are formally admitted to a Master's or Ph.D. program at the OGI School of Science & Engineering. To be eligible for a loan, students must take at least 5 credits each quarter, and must be U.S citizens or eligible non-citizens (e.g. permanent residents.) The "Free Application for Student Aid" (FAFSA) forms may be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Hard-copy forms are available from the OHSU Financial Aid Office. Use Federal School Code 004883 when completing the FAFSA form.


Federal Stafford Loans - Subsidized and Unsubsidized

  • Available to US citizens and eligible non citizens (e.g. permanent residents)
  • Must be taking at least 5 credits at OGI School of Science & Engineering
  • Must be formally admitted to a MS or Ph.D. program (currently students in certificate programs are not eligible for aid)
  • OHSU administers the federal subsidized Stafford loan (government pays the interest while you are in school) and the federal unsubsidized Stafford loan (government does not pay the interest)
  • Undergraduate loans are deferred as long as you are taking at least 5 credits at OGI - bring your Deferment Request form to the Office of Graduate Education for processing

To Apply for Financial Aid
1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may file electronically via the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Use school code 004883. Alternatively, you may pick up a printed FAFSA application form from the Department of Graduate Education Office (Paul Clayton Building, Suite 405, next to the Library).
2. You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) approximately 4-6 weeks after filing the FAFSA - this is confirmation that the federal Department of Education processed your application.
3. Once you receive your SAR, please notify OHSU's Financial Aid Office at 503-494-7800 that your FAFSA has been processed and that you would like to officially apply for financial aid through OHSU. You will then be mailed additional information detailing eligibility criteria and instructions for completing the financial aid process.
4. As soon as your financial aid check arrives, it will be deposited into your student account.


In School Deferments (From Previous Outstanding Loans)
If you currently have loans from your undergraduate or other college career, you may be eligible to defer repayment of these loans while you are in attendance at OGI. To qualify for an In School Deferment, you must be enrolled at least half time. Contact your lender for the appropriate form. The form will need to be completed by the OHSU financial aid office and mailed directly to your lender.


Financial Aid Exit Interview
All federal loan recipients who finish their studies at OGI are required to complete a Financial Aid Exit Interview. Contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@ohsu.edu or 503-494-7800 for the form.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Career Development Grants

The AAUW Educational Foundation, the largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women in the world, supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. The Foundation also makes several prestigious national awards to recognize excellence in achievement.


American Indian Graduate Center

AIGC was founded in 1969 to help open the doors to graduate education for American Indian and Alaskan Native college graduates. For over thirty years, AIGC has awarded more than 10,000 fellowships to qualified Native American and Alaskan Native students to pursue Master's, Doctorate and professional degrees in all fields.


Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship (Google)

Google will award four $10,000 scholarships for female students in the computer sciences during the 2007-2008 academic year; two scholarships will be awarded to graduate degree (Master's or PhD level) candidates. Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of academic background, responses to short essay questions and letters of recommendation.


Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship Awards

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) is a non-profit and non-partisan educational organization established in 1978 by members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to development the next generation of Latino leaders. There is no GPA requirement and students of all majors are eligible to apply. Students attending a graduate/professional program will receive $5,000.


The e8 Fellowship/Scholarship for Sustainable Energy Development (SED)

The e8 is an organization of leading electricity companies from the G8 nations. In conjunction with its goal of playing an active role in protecting the global environment, and promoting the efficient generation and use of electricity, it is offering awards of up to $23,000 US per year for students pursuing Masters Degrees and up to $30,000 US per year for post-Doctoral Fellows. Each of which will be provided for a two year period. These awards are available to students who are citizens of developing countries and countries whose economies are in transition (see list of eligible countries on our web site), who are interested in continuing their studies and contributing to the body of knowledge in sustainable energy development.


Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship for Minorities

In an effort to increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on the nation's college and university faculties, to enhance diversity on campuses, and to address the persisting effects of past discrimination, the Ford Foundation offers predoctoral fellowships to members of six minority groups whose under-representation in the professoriate has been severe and long-standing. The fellowship program identifies individuals of demonstrated ability and provides them with the opportunity to engage in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (ScD) degree. These scholars ultimately inspire other students of color to pursue an academic career in teaching and research.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

The US Department of Defense awards the highly competitive National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships. These fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies. US citizens and Nationals are eligible and recipients are allowed to pursue their graduate studies at the university of choice. Applications are open in the fall of each year.  Award includes full tuition, required fees and a stipend.


National Italian American Foundation

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has an education budget of $1,000,000. The NIAF will award scholarships and grants to outstanding students in the summer for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit for Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Areas of study are open and the awards range from $2,500 to $10,000.


National Physical Science Consortium

The NPSC offers a unique and exciting doctoral graduate fellowship program in the Physical Sciences and related Engineering fields. The program is open to all eligible students, with special emphasis toward the recruitment of underrepresented minority and female physical science and engineering students in order to offset the historic imbalance faced by these underrepresented groups within the research community. Each fellowship typically exceeds $200,000. There are no applicant fees for the student to apply for a NPSC fellowship. This is a full-time study, Ph.D. track fellowship program.

The program will award scholarships to qualified full-time undergraduate/graduate students. The scholarships may be renewed annually until students receive their final degree or certificate.
