BMCS M.S. Admissions

To assess an applicant's promise, the Division of BMCS relies on information provided by Department of Science & Engineering admissions:

  1. Official transcripts from each college or university attended.
Desirable GPA is 3.5/4.0. The division also looks at the amount of preparation in computer science and related courses in mathematics and engineering.

  2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
You need only submit scores for the general test; scores from the GRE computer science subject test are not required. Read about Advanced Placement Admission.

Recently admitted master's students have averaged 82nd percentile on the quantitative section. Students not taking the TOEFL averaged 79th percentile on the Verbal section; TOEFL score requirements are explained below.

  3. Three letters of recommendation
These should address your skills, dedication, and accomplishments. Ask the persons writing letters of recommendation for you to mention how long and in what capacity they have known you. If they are not known to the BMCS faculty, they should also describe their own backgrounds and experience. Even if you've been out of school for a while, we suggest you include at least one recommendation from someone who knows you from an academic setting.

  4. Statement of purpose.
In your own words, describe your goals for graduate study and a professional career and the field of specialization you have chosen for your graduate work.

  5. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
This is required of all master's applicants whose native language is not English unless the applicant earned an undergraduate degree in the United States. Desirable score is 650 PB/280 CB. An applicant whose score is between 580 and 650 PB (237 and 280 CB) may be admitted if special mitigating factors exist, e.g., excellent GRE scores.

Financial assistance is not normally offered to master's students, but read Financial Support for BMCS Students for a more thorough discussion of funding possibilities.
